Dystopia
For my sustained investigation, I wanted to focus on the idea that society is falling apart and we don’t care about resolving the issues. I challenged myself to analyze and realize what problems everyday citizens are facing and what that means for our future. For my pieces, I tend to over exaggerate and make the problem larger than it is when in reality, people focus on other aspects of life and make the issues minuscule. They all say that the future generations will deal with the problems because they believe they don’t have the power to change the issues and that people won’t listen. If you showed controversial topics to kids in middle school, they would be horrified and disgusted that no one is doing anything about it.
“The Eyes”-For my first piece, I decided I wanted to touch on the subject of government surveillance. This is a dystopia where we have eyes all over the world and they are watching our every move. I used markers to get the vibrancy and saturation I wanted and I used a white gel pen to add some extra details to the piece.

“The Tech”- For this piece I wanted to explore a future where technology will one day be apart of us and we have no choice but to accept it. I decided to use a hand connecting to a phone to show the eerie idea of it dangling from the hand to show it’s not natural. I used black lines across the person to separate it from the background and give it depth.

“The Pods”-In this dystopia, people are raised and made inside of pods rather than natural birth because I’m touching on the subject that everyone wants to be perfect. You can see they vary in ages to show how old they can be inside the pods. I used markers to get the values that I needed and I believe this piece turned out well.

“The Jackpot”-This piece focuses on the idea of a gambling addicted future where people would want to have the machines with them everywhere so if they need money, you can gamble wherever you need to. For this piece I tried to show how this woman is overusing the “machine” and she is becoming very skinny and she is puking blood along with a few dollars. I used a software called Paint Tool Sai to paint digitally and get the colors and values I desired.
|
“The Clones”- For this idea, I wanted to show how cloning might be prominent in a dystopia. Someone is attempting to make an army of clones and they are each labeled which number clone they are. I painted on a piece of cardboard and used a piece of transparent plastic for the cloning chamber. I decided to outline the “clones” in sharpie to emphasize the colors.
|
“The Disguise”-In this piece I wanted to explore the idea of people using “body” suits to change their identity. We live in a society where people are wanting to change their appearance to please others and it has gotten to a point where it’s glorified rather than shamed. I used a graphite pencil for the medium and an LED light for the background.

“The Guitarist”- For this piece, I drew inspiration from Pablo Picasso and his painting “The Old Guitarist”. I put my own spin on it by imagining a future where we slowly but surely replace our limbs to become the perfect specimen. I used markers to get the bright colors and I used a multi liner to outline the subject.
